Pretty Blah
So this is another netflix anime that has popped up and so I decided to watch it and well sadly I am not sure if there is anything good about this anime to be honest. This anime feels particularly generic to me. I think that is because it tries so very hard to force Violet to develop as a human being. However, given where Violet starts off that is not really that hard for her to do with time. But yeah this anime is pretty blah.
Take the episodes for instance. Well I guess that is a bit of a mistake on my part. I think that it is after episode 3 that the formula starts to take shape. So generally speaking Violet has to write a letter for one reason or another. They try and change things up a bit. Sometimes she is subbing in other times she is requested, other times she is just set out because she had the bandwidth. Each of these particular encounters have some kind of trauma associated with them. Generally some kind of negative and sad emotion. Violet writes, and does not understand at first. Then like magic she somehow comes into her own and manages to figure out and feel the emotion. This goes on for pretty much the remainder of the series with the exception of the last two episodes. So really getting to the end after the initial ramp up is the real problem. Well that and Violet is the sole focus of the anime.
I know that Violet is supposed to be the focus, but did they really have to make all the reoccurring side characters so... boring? I mean we have old friend doing a friend a favor, young ambitious guy, old advice guy, nerd girl, ambitious girl, and last but not least old lady who lords her lack of virginity over all the other girls. That about sums them up. None of them do anything that is surprising or out of character. None of them really develop as characters. All of them just more or less seem to be there to make it seem like Violet actually interacts with people. So yeah it is kind of an empty and boring gesture to really say that they do anything other than be annoying for the entirety of the series.
Last there is Violet's gimmick, her metal arms. Again this plays into the formula thing but still it gets old watching everyone do the same time every single time she takes off her gloves. Then people are either really awkward about them or forget they are there. The whole metal arms thing seems to really be just like a last ditch cosplay thing when I really think about it. I mean Violet rarely goes into detail about them and they rarely are central plot point. True they help save some people but eh... this just feels like something that was done to waste screen time. Which I guess you have to do when so much of the context of what is going on is Violet typing something.
All in all, this anime is really not very good. It is pretty boring and bland and really does not accomplish much other than having an aloof female walk around in a fancy dress with metal arms. I guess the series could have more potential if Violet was not so focused on exploring all the negative emotions in the world. However, it seems like a real challenge just to get her to experience the sad ones. The happy ones would be even worse. So I guess that they did the best they could do with what they were given. No reason to knock someone for trying to cash in on Saber... i mean.... trying to cash in on the aloof blonde who is totally not having anything to do with Fate/Stay night. Nope not at all, I mean Violet does not even express enjoyment, Saber at least has that over Violet.
