Nan Desu Kan 2009 Review
Well it has been... well 2 weeks I think since Nan Desu Kan 2009, and I cannot sleep. So I figure now is a good time to write my review. So lets say that jist of the review is that NDK was enjoyable. Not great, but an enjoyable way to give myself sore feet and some kind of virus. I say this because the hotel the convention was hosted was just too small. I mean last year NDK was at the threshold. This year it was broken wide open and will need to move. Cramped hallways and severely LIMITED parking will always ruin a con.
Sorry NDK planner guys, but if you guys do not move your con I am not going to come next year. I mean everyone knows what con goers are like. The lack of sleep makes a lot of con goers forget to bath. So when one makes his or her way through the small hallways one needs a gas mask. I guess that is why doing Resident Evil cosplay is so very popular. I mean you can justify wearing a gas mask to keep the wretched body odor that piles up on Saturday out. At times there is so little room in the area that I can feel other peoples not bathing getting on me. People are seriously that vile at cons, and we all know it. Then there is the size of the rooms.
Personally I think that everyone should be able to get into what ever panels they want to go to. However, the goal is to fill up the rooms. I can understand that. However, I should not have to wait in line for 60 plus minutes just to get into a panel. This year was particularly bad since my cosplay required combat boots, and like an idiot I forgot the insoles. So I wanted to be able to sit and enjoy a panel. Just to rest my feet and to get off the blisters. However, most of the panels were standing room only. Which made me not want to be a part of them as much. I guess I am not much of a fan if I cannot stand while in a panel. Then there was the issue of parking.
I really like going to cons. It is a great way to legitimately look at jail bait while they prance around half naked. And I can think, "Ah to be young and not a complete social recluse". Then I can take a picture and everything is swell. I mean it is not like there are that many females there who are my age and meet my standards. Anyway, this joy is easily snuffed by stress. The stress of wondering if my car was towed. That is right, it was ok last year when there was little to no threat of being towed. However, this year it was terrifying. That is another sign the con has out grown its location. When people have to find a place to park that is technically legal. Making small back roads in the tech center crowded and dangerous. Lucky for my friends and I we decided to park people in open places at the hotel while I got my car. My point is, I could not afford another car should my transmission get wrecked while it is being towed.
Now once we get past all big bad stuff, the con was a lot of fun. This year there were definitely more panels for me to go too. The only problem I ran into was how easy it was to see the panel. This was mostly in part to the fact that I was not will to stand and needed to give my feet a breather. I guess every room cannot have stadium seating. But a lot of the panels were ruined by the fact that I could not see what was going on. Take the Tea Ceremony, it was very nicely performed. However, I could not see a damn thing without standing. Granted I was mostly there for the tea, but that is besides the point. I only get to see shorter versions of the tea ceremony in anime. I was kind of curious to see what went on in these ceremonies. However, I digress as standing was an option I could have pursed.
Over all the panels were good. Almost all of the panels I went too were very enjoyable. A couple could have been better, however, I will cough that one up to the speakers. Now I can finally see the relevance of my public speaking courses at high school. While I doubt I could have done much better, I am left to question how much preparation went into some of these panels. For a portion of them it seemed like the speakers were just asked to speak. Which surprised me as the NDK is not a small con. Overall though the vast majority of panels were great fun.
So all in all, the con was enjoyable. Sadly the downsides listed above really pushed this years rating down. I really want to come to the con again next year. However, I do not think I can take another year of being cramped up in that small hotel. I really hope that the Directors see this issue as well. After all they reported record attendance. Then again, cons are to make money. Hopefully the people who invest time and money into this con will be kind and attempt to make the venue bigger.
