Power Rangers Meh-Stars
So, a couple of weeks ago I was told about a game being published by Nexon called Power Rangers All-Stars. It had a very fanboy concept behind it. An RPG like game where you can create teams of power rangers to fight off bad guys. It would include every Power Rangers franchise to date and likely will add new ones as the new shows come out. Which could be cool and fun and a great way to make people keep playing the game over the years. I think that Nexon has done a great job with Master of Eternity. I play that game almost religiously, on occasion I find myself skipping a day or two, but that is just life sometimes. Sadly, so far the first impression of the game is pretty basic. To be honest, I cannot say if I want to recommend this game.
So I cannot really crap too much on the whole micro-transaction part of the game, that is just part of the game. However, unlike other games from Nexon, it seems that the cost of getting new rangers is a bit too high. Especially since they are not making the regular roll cheaper than the specialized roll, and I know there is no perfect solution to this issue but you know it would be nice if we could get a game that would not make it too easy to get everything and not so expensive that there is no point in trying. However, that is also be expected, but I am not sure why it feels so much more jarring in this game.
Now onto gameplay, the whole point of the game. So one of the things that I like about Master of Eternity is the ability to auto-play. I can get my daily missions done with no real thought or effort. Well, that is much more concerning in this game. Nexon uses the same base level AI which means that you will burn through all your moves and not react very well to other things. This can lead to dying right now. I guess since I am playing this game from the start I do not have a way to power level everyone to be so overwhelmingly powerful that I can not pay attention. However, auto-play does not work well with this game anyway.
The game has you controlling all five rangers at once. Control in the sense that I focus on one, and then the rest kill the nearest target. This mechanic is a bit bugged though as it seems that sometimes the rangers only attack as a reaction not because there are more enemies. This issue can lead to rangers just standing around doing nothing, especially the one that you are controlling. This can cause you to lose a great deal of health and even fail the level. This is a problem that is hard to deal with because of the camera. The only way to fix the camera is to move around. There is no other solution for seeing stuff. You have to move the camera by moving a ranger. This is annoying when you come up to a wall, and the wall blocks out the view, and you cannot attack anything because the wall blocks the targeting. This can make the game frustrating especially if you are trying to get their 3-star reward system. Which is just one of many systems in the game.
So another problem I have is there is no real instruction on how to get a Megazord. I know that you have to unlock all the rangers from a specific series to get a Megazord, but I have not figured out how to bring them into regular combat. There appears to be a mode for Megazords, but you are stuck with the rangers from that series which makes fighting pointless because you may not have leveled up the rangers you have. Indeed there seems to just bee way too many roles to make anything good happen. The game feels overly complicated and tedious to get through your dailies. However, when I have to level up everything to survive, I can see how that would be a problem.
So overall, the game itself is okay, I do like playing it when I do play it, and they are trying to cobble together a good story. However, I cannot get excited to play the game, and that is the problem. There is no real challenge or feeling of accomplishment that I get when reading the story. It feels more like someone wanted to write a super cool multi-verse series and failed pretty hard. I will keep my eye on this game in the meantime and let people know if it changes.
