Incompatible Crossover Event
So I play a specific, mostly hated, Crunchyroll game and this week or month they are having some crossover event. Their crossover franchise is Gekijouban Shingeki no Kyojin. A series well-known for its dark kind of dystopian future where people get violently eaten by giant human-like creatures and all of humanity lives in fear behind giant walls. As where Memoria Freese is based around a light novel that is supposed to be a romantic comedy that everyone can enjoy from an innocent and fun point of view. While there might be some overlap, this is not exactly a match made in heaven.
Yes, there is some mild overlap with the fact that Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatte Iru Darouka: Familia Myth does have moments in it where things do get very real and very dramatic and even bloody and violent. However, this is a pretty small part of the series. It is meant to show determination and guts more than it is to be violence for the sake of putting up a dark worldview that shows the mental state of the people living in the world. As where Gekijouban Shingeki no Kyojin is the reverse. Yes, there are light-hearted events and romantic kind of things, but the main focus is on the horror that comes from the Titans. As such this is not the most excellent example of how to go about making a crossover event. Do not get me wrong I can see this barely working, except for the fact that the group doing the game made one fatal flaw.
That is right they included images from Gekijouban Shingeki no Kyojin the anime in the game. The art style of these anime is very different. Gekijouban Shingeki no Kyojin will show a much darker more upsetting view of the world. The characters are drawn to appear more human, and the overall style is meant to evoke some kind of despair. As where Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatte Iru Darouka: Familia Myth is intended to be happy, fluffy, and silly. They were already going to have to redraw all the characters from Gekijouban Shingeki no Kyojin to match the style of Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatte Iru Darouka: Familia Myth. However, throwing in those images from the original anime just kind of clashes with the overall style of Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatte Iru Darouka: Familia Myth. As such it can be kind of jarring to go from one to the other.
I guess not all is lost though, I mean they did put a lot of effort into the background city. That is going to be a massive win for the game. Instead of being like all the other events where you are just aware the event is going on, you have little characters flying around and random bits from the titans appearing above buildings. It makes me feel like this event is going on. Which is not something that has been happening a lot with crossover events. Usually, the crossover events have one spot where the event takes place, and that is that. However, in this anime, it is relevant all the time. That is something that I enjoy and hope to see more of in the future.
I am still going to play the event, and I always play the events those are fun. However, I hope that in the future no one is going to go out and find two clashing anime and try and do this again. There is the good and the bad, and sadly the bad ruins the event for me. I mean I could nitpick a bit more and talk about how only the Scouting squad is represented, so far, but that is a nitpick, I am not going to put that up as something to be angry about really. Only I think 26 or so more chapters to go I guess that I had better get on that so that I am ready for grind mode. Thank god I somehow got a million potato snacks.
