Saved By The Marathon
So it is always interesting when my interest in an anime is kept going because I did a marathon through it as opposed to watching it one episode at a time, as one would expect to do. Really this is something that has happen only recently when I have been catching up on anime for stuff. I can actually make it through the anime because I waited to do a full scale marathon. So this is one of those weird things that has happened. Since I have not yammered about anything recently I guess I will talk about this.
So the first series that got me to think about this particular topic was Full Metal Panic. This season there is a new season of the anime being released. While I really liked what I saw of the first season and fumoffu. That was back in a time when I did not really have as much access to anime. So I had only seem chunks of it. I actually have never seen the second season until recently. So suffice it to say I was looking for a good reason to go through this anime. Just as expected I got through season one and fumoffu. Then came season 2 and well I am glad that this was another marathon.
Sometimes anime faceplants while trying to capitalize on popularity and that is exactly what happened with this anime. While I am sure that the novels were good the anime was not really worth anime, the second season. I have no idea what happened to be honest but the season kind of petered out into oblivion. I guess that is why it took so long to get season 3. I had pretty much lost interest in the anime around mid-way through season two, but I kept going because there is a season 3. Had I actually seen this when it came out I would have been much less inclined to keep going.
Then there is Digmon Adventure Tri. This anime works much better as a Marathon. The only reason I am really giving it a go is because there is a movie event coming up and nothing is better than watching anime on the big screen right? So I figured I would do my best to watch this anime. I have to say that the anime is better when you can get through the full thing all at once. I remember when I first tried there were only 4 episodes out and that made for lousy watching. The episodes are all following a preset pattern of 3 episodes of teenage angst and one episode of digimon combat. Well for now, I am still working on this one. Which is kind of lame when you want to see the digimon and know the story. I guess that is why I kind of lost interest in this season.
I guess overall the story is not bad, it is just not good in the small chunks that we were fed. You just kind of have to take it like a shot, all at once, then the effects work out for you and the pain is minimized. I guess the targeted age group is the reason for this issue, but still I really wish that they had stuck to the more original formula. Spending a quarter of the episode watching Digimon digivolve is more fun that what I am seeing now. Even if it does get a little redundant. Better than watching the team work through teenage problems. Still when I know that I do not really have to get anxious about whether or not the anime should be watched more it makes the teen stuff easier to take.
So yeah those are my random thoughts, sometimes anime is just better when you get a chance to marathon through it as opposed to having to stay home and keep track of things on a week by week basis. I am glad that I have learned this. Though I guess I might have already known. After all anime can always be better in marathons because I get to see everything and I am not left for seven days just sitting around being a loser wanting to know what happened next. At least I can take solace in that. Still it is nice to know that it can make other anime interesting. After all, now I have even more anime to watch because the anime which sucked episodically might be awesome when you just take it all in one dreadful gulp.
