The Idol Anime
So a while back I took to watching Love Live. You know that other anime out there that is like Idolmasters or whatever. Basically these anime follow the lives of these idols. You know some how adolescent females who are given a full-time job singing and being cute. Really there is very little difference between these anime. Generally speaking you have a group of girls. They all have varying personalities but they are all basically brain dead, bubbly, twerps who have one interesting thing about themselves which is generally a cookie cutter trope. You know, the athlete, the animal lover, the shy nerd, the hanger on, so on and so forth. Generally something happens and they have a concert and repeat. So yeah pretty boring stuff. I cannot really understand how these shows do so well in Japan.
Then I started watching this new fangled thing, idol anime where the idols are male. That was something of a shock. to me. I mean there is a pretty sharp contrast between the two different shows. Well okay not really when I think about it. There are some major differences but overall these idol anime about males are the same as the one about females. However, the differences make the anime a great deal more enjoyable than the female idol anime. I mean for starters the idols can old. That is strange. I mean normally when females hit their 20s they are pretty much written off in that industry. However, sometimes you encounter guys who are almost in their 30s. These guys come together to form a boy band. Of course the majority of them are young but still it is a nice twist. Then there is the way the story is told. Really these anime feel more like shounen anime then they do idol anime. The story can be told in a very shounen way. With villains and trials and tribulations. At times the whole concert bit feels kind of secondary. We do not really need to hear them sing, but we need to know that they do sing. I do not know, it is really kind of strange how captivating the idol anime about males can be. There has to be some kind of stupid reason for me to want to waste my time on these anime.
I think the main thing is the fact that I guess male idols are a female thing and female idols are a male thing. Thus since these anime are pointed at females I just sort of see a bunch of guys who almost look like females trying to be sexy or cute or whatever for the females. Which means that will go over my head. As opposed to the female idol anime where all the characters are constantly changing into cute outfits, or being the booth babe or stuff like that. As males are the primary target for those anime. I guess they waste a lot of time doing that whole cute sexy thing. I think they do this in the male idol anime, but I am not sure.
Either way it has been kind of weird wanting to watch these anime because normally I just enjoy all the Miku Miku Dance videos made by very lonely people of these idols screwing everything that moves. That is about as far into these anime I used to go. Now I am actually watching anime and trying to pay attention to the story and am not all that bored. It is just weird for me to think about.
