The Stuff on TV
You know a friend of mine asked me how did American TV exist before comic book series came into the picture. My original response was something along the lines of "Like a Brain-dead human it was there, but only just there". However, I have just finished watching Daredevil on Netflix and now I realize that my previous answer is not really all that accurate. Really I can honestly say I do not know how American TV shows really existed before the comic book revival.
I mean yeah there have been plenty of different attempts at comic book TV but none really panned out. I have not watched many of those attempts but for the most part I believe the primary problem was that the shows lacked something. Sometimes that something was connection to the comic book other times it might have been being made for children so I honestly cannot say that I know for sure why the comic book shows failed. However, after you watch most of the shows that are out there. The answer becomes much clearer than you realize.
Really the reason why they are so awesome now is because finally the comic book fans of the past are finally making their way into the positions that matter in entertainment. That is important you know, having someone who was positively effected by comics actually directing or writing the story. Which is nice when you think about it. No longer do we have people who feel such things are trivial and not real art or whatever actually doing the work. Which will make for better shows overall.
I think that comics fall under similar misconceptions that anime fall into. Namely the one that since they are hand drawn that they are in fact just there to entertain children. Then you sit down and read a few and realize that... well you are wrong if you think that. After all, many seem to enjoy killing people or preventing people from being killed and stuff like that so you know it was kind of fun to come to that realization. Tackling those hard issues and drawing a wider audience who can afford the habit. Though currently the movies seem to enjoy walking that annoying line of being just on the edge of family friendly. Which is where the idea of collaboration comes into play.
I think that this is another huge success of Marvel and the idea of collaborating with everything. Seriously, this whole idea of having each hero having their own story and then having all the same heroes come together and have the team story is probably the thing that has made these shows so much better. Of course I am talking about he Avengers and the rumored Defenders TV series that might come out. Instead of recasting all the roles you keep the faces familiar. Which gives the universe that we get to exist in something fare more real and tangible. I do not know, I just hope that it does not get played out too much. It seems like it might become a problem in the future.
So yeah, I guess I just want to give a shout out to the whole spawning industry that is getting in the way of me watching anime. Lucky for me everything has slowed down a little bit which makes my life so much easier. Now can go back to deciding how much fan service I can take. Ah fan service, the one thing that you cannot really have in these comic book movies. Maybe that is a good thing, I am not sure but at minimum it can be something I can enjoy there not being. You know what with the anime industry slowly being consumed by hot girls losing their clothes. Though I am pretty sure that I have already ranted about that. So I guess I will end this... average entry with that note.
