Hating the School Life 2015
So let me start off with my first reviews of anime for the past season. To be honest I am going to be lazy for this one and tie 3 together in what I am calling school life anime. The three anime that I am talking about are Absolute Duo, Juuou Mujin no Fafnir, Seiken Tsukai no World Break. All three are basically the same anime but they have slight differences to make them a little unique. I guess before that though I am going to have to go on about what I qualify as a "School Life" anime. It is simple, if a character has to go to a special school for their special abilities, it is school life. Sure there are plenty of other anime where school is involved, BUT they go to school as a part of life not the sole purpose of the anime. As such these anime all have lots of neato similarities that make them all bleed together.
First things first, the main character is a male who is surrounded by females, some crazy how. In the case of Fafnir it makes sense as to why that happens. However, in the other two it just kind of happens. I personally would have liked something that had a female lead. Because, let's be honest, I get tired of a guy trying to not have sex with every female who is throwing themselves at the guy. Next we have the whole magic thing. Yes I like magic explodyness as much as the next person, but seriously can we try something else? Why not a martial arts school or an assassination school? Oh yeah... I guess I did not watch Ansatsu Kyoushitsu, damn... well whatever I bet some of these rules apply. The worst of all of the similarities is the damn near complete focus on standard school life. In all of these you never see anything other than students sitting in a classroom. Well I guess Aria is a little different, but overall the only focus is on school life. Which pretty much ruins the anime for me.
The problem with the crop of shows is the fact that all of them take place in school. The plot follows, what most consider to be, a "standard" Japanese school experience. Which is just fine, I do not mind those elements being thrown in. However, what I do mind is when the stupid freaking show completely revolves around school life. Individually each of these anime had a great setting. Well maybe not Absolute Duo, but the other two had great settings. There was plenty to work with in the universe that had been spawned. Sadly the majority of the time is wasted on watching a bunch of sexually frustrated/confused kids be called perverts. I get to see every major event of school life. You always have a best buddy trip to the beach, there is always a training camp, there is a study group, there is exam season, and the festivals. Once you get through all of that nonsense then, and only then can we have an actual unique plot and story to follow. Really the only thing that I really like about these anime is the fact that the male lead is not a complete pushover.
If there is one stereotype that is shattered it is the wimpy male. That makes me happy with anime, true some are wimpier than others, BUT they are all bad ass. So really that made me happy, while the characters did take some shit because they are males it was only trivial shit at best. If the female gave the male shit for something he did when he was clearly not in the wrong, he stood up for himself. So that was a nice change.
So all in all, these anime could have been made better. I am getting to the point where I just want to skip episodes because I can watch the first couple of minutes and know that the episode is pointless. Truth is that I do not mind these "organization" type anime. However, can we please move on from high school? True I know a lot of Mangaka have never held a real office job, but still come on. Can we at least make something up or consult a friend who is not a complete shut-in? I guess that adults do not sell. After all, it is so much fun to be the sole male who is the only interesting or sexually appealing male in the school. Then watch all the females surround him and he not have sex with them. I mean really would it kill someone to write a manga where the main character is this guy. Then comes his second year it is implied that he is sleeping with all the females or something? This whole school life thing is just so incredibly played out and boring. At least change it a little. That is why DENKI-GAI and Servant x Service were so much fun because they were different. I could over look all the high school stuff because they were not in high school. Oh well, anything to sell sexy figures right?
