Anime? Wasabi 2014
So I could not think of a clever title for this time around so I guess I just put the first thing that came to my mind which was the minor confusion around whether this was an anime convention or not. Do not get me wrong, the convention had anime in it and even some anime related panels. However, this year the convention felt a bit more like.... I don't know a geek convention more than anything. I guess the main thing that made it feel that was was the panels
I mean a lot of the panels were focused around the creative process for.. well any genre. I guess since anime can be a part of very genre out there. it is not surprising that the focus came back to Fantasy, Sci-Fi or whatever. It was kind of interesting how many panels focused on the novel writing portion of the side of geekdom.. I guess writing novels is easier than drawing...still it was kind of weird to see so many panels dedicated to discussing non-anime things. The only panels that really were anime related were the cosplay panels.
I guess costume stuff is the only place where I felt the true anime feel. Since there are a lot of things about costuming that make it so hard to do. Still it was a bit disappointing that the costuming panels were the only real anime panels there. I guess there were a few hentai or senshi panels... but still I do not know it just felt like this convention was geared more towards other crowds.
One kind of surprising thing was seeing all the sci-fi and actors from TV. That was something that was really new for me. I mean I have never been to a convention where you could meet actors from some shows. I mean it is not like I am into that kind of thing. I apperciate people who entertain me I do.. but.. that is just more data to remember. Well that was kind of weird is all I am saying. Not really a bad thing if I think about it.. but it is something that was new for this convention. It is not even like there were that many anime voice actors there. Most of the people were from sci-fi shows and professional cosplayers. Not that it was a bad thing to do something like that, but you know.. just a little odd.
At least the game room was the same. I am glad that we got this hotel, because the game room felt a bit less crowded this time around. More space to stretch my legs is always nice. Granted a lot of the systems just seemed to be on auto-pilot. Not to mention the fact that the new generation of systems seemed to have no moderation. Oh well, it was still nice to have room to move and breath in that room. That can make the room hard to deal with somethings. Granted there as a nice lack of DDR in the game room this year. I guess the Kinetic Dancing game is just too cool right?
So I guess all in all I was just not feeling the whole... anime side of things. Yeah there was lots of cosplay, I guess there was a video room int eh later hours of the night. However, all the panels and activities in the convention felt more like something you would see at a sci-fi or comic convention. Not really a convention dedicated to anime. However, the convention was still fun to attend. It was a change, but it was not like I do not enjoy going to conventions and cosplaying and watching hot girls dance around almost naked for the entire weekend. That is always fun to do. I just hope that next year anime returns and these little writing or sci-fi panels sort of take a back seat.
