Has everything and some fighting
So this anime has pretty much everything you would expect from the usual fantasy genre. You have the demon lord, the hero, the hero's party, and all that stuff. However, you get a new perspective on the whole thing. Well, I guess it was not really unique, to be honest. The whole concept that the humans are just aggressors and the demon lord wants to, at minimum, not have war is not new. However, this anime takes a nice twist about who the good and bad guys are, instead of focusing on all the fun fighting and explosions and sexy costumes. We get to focus on building a sustainable village, economics, politics, and cultural exchange. This anime does what many schools do not do, educating people.
There is plenty of anime out there that do the same. However, this one takes a much more long-term approach to things. The ultimate goal of the demon lord is to install liberalism and individualism into the populous of not just the human world but the demon world. Which will be difficult. So you start off from the first seed planted in the form of crop rotation. Then slowly work up to showing people they do not need the superpowers to feed them and so on and so forth. There is even the retaliation of the powers that be. You get all the aspects of the sudden desire for both sides to come together to stop killing each other.
The anime itself does a pretty good job of pacing itself as well. This is quite the challenge, given the length of the anime. The anime is on the shorter side, but it does not feel rushed. The gradual effects of people adopting new methods and becoming more independent show up very nicely. It kind of shows how the war machine thrives on desperation and fear as countries start to decide they are not going to fight anymore and want to start trading. It is interesting watching everything play its part.
There are a lot of characters in this anime which makes it hard to keep up with all of them. However, you get to see how each character takes the skills they have been given and slowly starts to grow and become prominent in the world. Then, these characters go out and spread their voices, whether or not they intended it. As the anime goes on and on, you slowly see how the world goes out and tries to make money and keep itself prosperous. The anime itself is even a little inspirational.
This section gets an honorable mention because it was quite the stirring speech. One of the maids tasked with being the demon lord's stand-in does give an inspirational speech about how you should not just do stuff because you are told. While I think that the speech's outcome was a bit idealistic, the speech itself is what matters. It gives several lessons that you will not learn from anyone in the regular world. Sadly it kicks off an interesting section of the anime, which has to end because this anime is not going to be famous no matter how you stretch things.
So, all in all, this anime is worth a watch for many reasons. You can take your pick. Maybe you want to learn more about economics or even politics. Perhaps you want to see what war really looks like and where the big moves get made. Maybe you are really into dragon ladies who breathe fire whenever they talk. It is all there for you. A bit slow going and lacking in action most of the time. However, the anime itself more than makes up for it and, even better, does all the boring stuff interestingly and entertainingly. Which can be really hard for things like economics and politics.
